Zona: Siberian Prison Camps - Carl De Keyzer Mar 01, 08 - May 23, 08
- -

The Southeast Museum of Photography - 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd. Daytona Beach. Zona is Siberian slang for prison. During 2000 through 2002, Carl De Keyzer documented daily life in 35 of 135 prison camps in the region of Krasnojarsk, Siberia.
In a territory as big as Europe, prisoners live in a 'country' of its own governed by specific rules and aesthetics. Led by one general-in-charge, they constitute a free labor force of some 1,000,000 men and women gathered in camps built mostly in the 1930s, as described by Aleksandr Soljenytsin in his novel 'The Gulag Archipelago.'
