Quotable Quote 'The Old Spanish Sugar Mill & Griddle House, located in Florida'sDeLeon Springs State Park, about a 30-minute drive west of Daytona Beach, offered me an unusual breakfast experience. After I put in my breakfast order, the eggs (raw and still in the shell) and the homemade pancake mix (served in large pitchers) were given to me - and I had to cook them myself, on the built-in griddle located right in my table! I couldn't help but think that this would be a different and entertaining dining experience for the whole family, for what child wouldn't like to be a part of such a breakfast?' - John M. 'It's probably too early to predict, but we can't help but be encouraged,' says Halifax Area Advertising Authority Chair Larry Fornari. 'While our revenues came in around five percent below the April 2008 totals, we're comparing that to the 17.24 percent we were down in March. Our occupancy for April decreased only one percentage point -- to 58 percent from 59 percent in April 2008 -- and our average daily rate decreased just $3.55 from April 2008. We feel like we may be turning a corner, and we're definitely ready.'
The Halifax Taxing District is a region which includes the Greater Daytona Beach Area from Ponce Inlet to Ormond By The Sea. The Halifax Area Advertising Authority is charged with tourism promotion for the area and oversees the activities of the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The Convention Development Tax, a three percent tax levied in the Halifax Taxing District on overnight accommodations, is dedicated solely to the funding of local tourism marketing initiatives. The Tourist Development Tax, an additional three percent 'bed tax' levied countywide, is currently being used to fund the $76 million expansion of the Ocean Center.
