In Volusia County, there are two taxes on transient rentals. These are called the Convention Development Tax (CDT) and the Tourist Development Tax (TDT). The CVB's primary source of funding is the Convention Development Tax. The County of Volusia administers the collection of both the CDT and TDT.
Convention Development Tax
In 1984 a "special taxing district" was formed to levy the Convention Development Tax within the Halifax Advertising Taxing District which is the taxing district for the greater Daytona Beach area. Other taxing districts in Volusia County include Southeast (New Smyrna Beach area) and West (DeLand-Deltona area.)
The Convention Development Tax is levied on short term rentals and the funds must be used for the following purposes: (a) To promote and advertise tourism; (b) to fund convention bureaus, tourist bureaus, tourist information centers, and news bureaus. The rate for these taxes is 3 percent. In Volusia County, this tax is collected and distributed in the three taxing districts described above.

Tourist Development Tax
The Tourist Development Tax was enacted in 1978 levying a 2 percent tax on short term rental of accommodations for six months or less. On April 24, 2003, the Volusia County Coucil increased the tax to 3 percent. Revenue from this tax is pledged to the Ocean Center, the area's multi purpose convention and entertainment complex.
